Bunyan Software is built by engineers who have spent the last twenty-five years inside high-volume industrial sawmills — designing and testing scanning systems and standing on the catwalk in safety glasses arguing with operators about why the machine called a clear #2 a #3. We also log our own timber and break it down on our own portable bandmill in our shop. LogScanner and LogMaster were built so the small operator finally has the same tools the big mills have depended on for decades.

Scanning has never been available to the individual equipment operator. Single-man mills, portable bandsaws, one-person log decks — they have all been measured by tape, eye, and experience. The scanners on commercial lines cost more than the mill itself. The optimizers required a control room. The graders demanded a structured-light tunnel and a calibration crew. None of it scaled down to the operator who only needs to make the next cut count.
A modern iPhone Pro has a LiDAR sensor accurate to a couple of centimetres at working distance, a processor faster than the workstations those industrial scanners ran on, and a camera that out-resolves any photogrammetry rig from a decade ago. Put the three together and an iPhone Pro now does what an industrial scanning line used to do — at least for the cuts that matter to a small operator.
